Kinesiology (Kin) is the study of human movement. There is a large focus on education and the self-management of pain and tension. It’s an in-depth intervention involving constant assessment and in-the-moment treatment tailoring in response to how your body responds. I take a holistic approach to Kin whereby I’m not just looking and working with you on the presenting problem area, but taking your history and whole body into consideration. Having this comprehensive understanding helps me to see how your body has got to the place it has and we can set to work on unwinding those patterns.
The ultimate aim is to bring the body back to balance either to improve function, reduce pain, prevent injury or recover from injury. You’re ready to end sessions when the muscles are working as they should be. Due to the complexity of the body, it’s very important to work with someone highly trained when you’re undertaking this sort of work. Kin is a perfect standalone or follow-on from more passive treatments so that you’re not seeing the same problems arise again and again.
How is Kin different to Physio or other modalities?
There is definitely a crossover and both use exercise to a certain extent to address dysfunction or injury. Physio, RMT and Chiropractic care are primarily passive treatments, meaning that they provide adjustments and other hands-on techniques to you. They usually prescribe exercise to activate the muscles they have released in their sessions.
Kin or Active Rehab is more dynamic, active treatment where we’re teaching your body how to strengthen weaknesses and create new movement patterns to provide lasting relief. Without active rehab after passive treatments, the body can go back to its old ways of being and so through Kin you are teaching your body a new, more functional movement pattern so that it doesn’t return to it’s old patterns shortly after other treatments.
What do sessions with me look like?
In our first session I will conduct an in-depth movement analysis, look for dominant patterns and potential muscle imbalances. Then I’ll create a tailored program to work through in sessions with constant observation and feedback from me on how your body is responding. Based on how it responds, I will tailor cues for where we need to modify to unlearn the compensation strategies your body has developed to cope with injuries.
Each session will include movement analysis and an exercise program with in-session modifications. Each session will never look exactly like the last because I’m constantly looking to see how the body is moving and modify exercises based on that. I will be able to tell where we need to push and where we need to scale back in order to get you the best results. Even if you can’t come to sessions in person, I’m still skilled enough to be able to give you over-video cues in real-time and tailor programs to help you move on from treatment sooner.
